Preparing for onsite troubleshooting
Who is this article for?
Users who need to prepare for troubleshooting.
No special access or permissions are required.
This article outlines the essential preparation steps and guidelines for conducting effective onsite troubleshooting of NMT equipment.
Following the general troubleshooting rule
Before applying any corrective measure (remotely or locally), search for the status of what you would like to correct or restart. This allows you to compare the situation before and after your intervention.
Gathering typical equipment for onsite troubleshooting
To prepare for onsite troubleshooting:
- Gather the list of tools (see section 7.7).
- Collect spare parts including modem, stratoPi, SD card, USB stick, PCB, and USB cable.
Understanding automatic recovery procedures
Note: If the modem fails to access the internet, a modem power cycle is attempted every 10 minutes. If the issue persists after three hours, the StratoPi itself is rebooted.
Managing the i2c cable during troubleshooting
When troubleshooting onsite, you may see the SLM and modem rebooting too frequently due to watchdog procedures:
- The NMT manager detects an issue with the modem and attempts to power cycle it
- The NMT manager detects an issue with the SLM and attempts to power cycle it
This frequent rebooting may interfere with your troubleshooting work.
To prevent unwanted reboots:
- Unplug the i2c cable from the Power Control Box.
Important: When you leave the site, you must reconnect this i2c cable back in place.
Setting up hotspot connection for WiFi fallback
When the modem fails to connect to the internet onsite, you can establish a WiFi fallback connection for data recovery.
To create a hotspot connection:
- Turn on a hotspot connection using your smartphone.
- Set the SSID to casper_support.
- Set the password to casper_haarlem.
- Set the security to WPA2-PSK (or WPA2-Personal).
If the StratoPi is on and functioning correctly, it will automatically connect to this hotspot. After a few minutes, a maintenance tunnel may be established towards the NMT (after hearing three beeps from the StratoPi), allowing Ideagen third level support to connect if needed.
Configuring brand new NMT or swapped SD card
When using a brand new NMT or after swapping an SD card, the NMT must first connect to the internet to retrieve its configuration from the central server. Until this is complete, no noise level is recorded.
If the modem fails to connect to the internet (because several issues can occur coincidently), connect the NMT to the internet via a local hotspot connection (see previous section). Once the configuration is retrieved, the NMT starts recording levels and audio.
Completing onsite troubleshooting
To finish your onsite work:
- Check all cables are reconnected.
- If some cables are left disconnected on purpose, make a note in the mobile app.
- Go to the Commands menu in the mobile maintenance app.
- Launch Stats.
- Check if all values are as expected.
- Launch live audio.
- Make some noise (whistle, make some impacts on the microphone mast).
- Check if you can hear the sound you produced (delay of five to seven seconds).
Carrying out retrospective actions
Carry out a retrospective each time needed to review and improve troubleshooting procedures.
This article provides essential preparation steps and procedures for troubleshooting NMT equipment onsite, including equipment requirements, automatic recovery processes, and connection fallback methods.
Following the general troubleshooting rule
Before undertaking any corrective action (remotely or onsite), consult the status of the operation to be corrected or restarted so you can compare the before and after situation.
Gathering typical equipment for onsite troubleshooting
To prepare for onsite troubleshooting:
- Gather the required tools (see section 7.7).
- Collect spare parts including modem, StratoPi, SD card, USB stick, PCB, and USB cables.
Understanding automatic recovery procedures
If the modem fails and the StratoPi cannot access the internet, an automatic restart is attempted every 10 minutes.
If the problem persists after 3 hours, the StratoPi itself is restarted.
Managing the i2c cable during troubleshooting
When troubleshooting an NMT onsite, you may see the SLM and modem restart frequently. This can be caused by watchdog procedures:
- The NMT manager detects a modem problem and attempts to restart it
- The NMT manager detects an SLM problem and attempts to restart it
If this becomes disruptive during troubleshooting, disconnect the i2c cable from the Power Control Box.
Important: This cable must be reconnected before you leave the site.
Setting up hotspot connection for WiFi fallback
When the modem cannot connect to the internet onsite, immediately activate a hotspot connection using your smartphone with the following settings:
ssid="casper_support"
password="casper_haarlem" (security: WPA2-PSK, or «WPA2-Personal»)
If the StratoPi is on and functioning, it will automatically connect to this hotspot. After a few minutes, a maintenance tunnel may be established to the NMT (after hearing 3 beeps from the StratoPi), allowing Ideagen third level support to connect if needed.
Configuring brand new NMT or swapped SD card
When using a brand new NMT or after swapping an SD card, the NMT must first connect to the internet to retrieve its configuration from the central server. Until this is complete, no noise level is recorded.
If the modem fails to connect to the internet (for any reason, as several issues can occur simultaneously), connect the NMT to the internet via a local hotspot connection (see previous section). Once the configuration is retrieved, the NMT will start recording sound levels and audio.
Completing onsite troubleshooting
To complete your onsite troubleshooting:
- Check all cables are reconnected.
- Make a note in the mobile app if any cables are intentionally left disconnected.
- Go to the Commands menu in the mobile maintenance app.
- Launch Stats.
- Check if all values are as expected.
- Launch live audio.
- Make some noise (whistle, make impacts on the microphone mast).
- Check if you can hear the sound you produced (delay of 5 to 7 seconds).
Carrying out retrospective actions
Carry out a retrospective each time needed.
- Starten Sie Live Audio.
